Alternative nesting sites for house sparrows

Who would have thought that big cities are such an attractive habitat for many different bird species? Especially on the green grounds of the gardening school and the inviting Laskerwiese, which are in the immediate vicinity of the Ostkreuz Campus and are important parts of the neighbourhood, birds, insects and other animal species feel very much at home. But construction sites also seem to be interesting for birds. For example, house sparrows were discovered on our construction site during the demolition directly on Persiusstraße, and they were interested in the open roof of the former car dealership. For this reason we had shut down the construction from 12.4. to 4.5.2021. In the meantime, the Environmental and Nature Conservation Office of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district authority of Berlin has examined the site from the point of view of species protection. Fortunately, the dismantling did not destroy any bird nesting sites. In order to create space for the house sparrows, also known as sparrows, to nest and breed, we will set up alternative nesting sites for them at the Ostkreuz Campus in the future and thus offer them a new home.
